I Sing Breakfast Praises Too

Fried plantains and an egg over easy.

My mom loves me.

Agreement

It’s not enough that we believe.

“You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.” - James 2:19

We need to agree. Agree with what God says about us. Agree that His plans are best.

With agreement comes power.

Do you believe? Or do you believe AND agree?

I Sing Praises To My Sandwich

Behold, the Beef Martini. Lovingly prepared at Wright’s Gourmet House in Tampa. I’ve been eating these since I was in high school…I would skip lunch for a week and save the money for it.

If I didn’t have family in Tampa, this sandwich would be worth the drive anyway.

Freshly baked bread…
Thinly sliced lean roast beef…
Mushrooms sauteed in white wine…
Crispy bacon…
And warm homemade garlic butter.

There’s just no way around it. This is a life changing sandwich. A culinary spiritual experience. An all-inclusive resort for your taste buds. If you come to Tampa and don’t eat it…well, then you’re a goober.

What’s your favorite sandwich?

New Star Trek Trailer…Come Geek With Me

If you haven’t seen it yet, here ya go…watch, and we shall discuss:

My thoughts:

  1. Kid that stole my vintage Corvette + driving it off a cliff in the future = big time grounded. Even if your name IS James Tiberius Kirk.
  2. I love the quick shots of some MASSIVE buildings looming in the mist over the horizon.
  3. Kirk drives up on his bike to see a starship being built. Is it the Enterprise? Maybe. But this is where the hard-core geeks are probably getting upset. As I recall, according to the original Star Trek “canon”, the Enterprise was built in space at an orbiting shipyard.
  4. Spock’s mom is Winona Ryder. Sweet.
  5. Really quick shot of Spock appearing with some CGI lines and swirls whirling around him. Is this the transporter effect? If so, hard-core upset number two.
  6. Dude. Zachary Quinto is a good Spock.
  7. The bridge of the Enterprise looks like an Apple Store.
  8. Quick shots of things blowing up. Always an important thing in a movie for me.
  9. Apparently, Kirk and Spock aren’t good buddies right away. Interesting.
  10. Uhura takes off her shirt. I’m sure there’s a very important plot point that needs this to happen for dramatic effect. Yeah, that’s it. (Personally, I’m glad Nichelle Nichols never took off HER shirt. That would have been disturbing on many levels)
  11. Scotty says “I like this ship! It’s exciting!” - Simon Pegg brings the comic relief. He should be a good Scotty.
  12. Couple of quick shots of Sulu kicking butt.
  13. Dr. McCoy says “Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence.” - wow. Deep. Then there’s a quick shot of Karl Urban (Eomer in “Lord Of The Rings”) delivering the end of that line. Dude…he’s a REALLY good McCoy! Even looks like him!
  14. Okay, then there’s a quick shot of a monster. I froze the trailer and checked it out. I’m pretty sure it’s a cousin of the monster from Cloverfield, except he’s smaller and red. Makes sense. Why spend all that money on a monster and only use him in one movie?
  15. Uh oh. Kirk in his underpants. And he’s not alone. Apparently, there’s gonna be sex on the Enterprise. Who knew?
  16. More things blowing up. Good. I need that to forget Kirk in his underpants.
  17. Eric Bana as a Romulan, just back from an appearance on L.A. Ink. “The wait is over”. Good line.
  18. I really like that Abrams is using the old school Starfleet insignia and original Star Trek typeface. Nice little music notes, reminiscent of the original theme.

Okay, I’m officially excited. I’m not so hard-core that I’m freaking out about Abrams taking some liberties with the back story. I don’t have costumes hanging in my closet and blueprints of the Enterprise on my desk.
But I’ve loved all things Star Trek since I was a kid (okay, not ALL things. I thought Voyager was dumb. And Star Trek V - The Final Frontier was just about the worst movie EVER made. But other than those few things, yeah. Everything else.). Therefore, I am SO pumped about this movie.

Christmas Music

This post is part of Music Monday, on the Bloggable Music Network.

You’re probably already hearing Christmas music in the retail stores. We don’t officially play it in our house until the day after Christmas (oops. Thanksgiving. Thanks Patti), but then it’s non-stop until Christmas day. We love it.

Here’s the big ones we’ll be playing in the Joseph cars and home (and some iTunes links for you to check them out):

A Charlie Brown Christmas - Vince Guaraldi Trio. The ULTIMATE Christmas soundtrack. Makes me smile every time it plays.

Snow Angels - Over The Rhine. Haunting and beautiful. And there’s an amazing instrumental track called “Goodbye Charles” that’s a bit of a nod to Guaraldi.

At Christmas - James Taylor. Come on. It’s James Taylor. It’s Christmas music. You HAVE to love it.

In The Spirit - Michael McDonald. The link is to Amazon, because this CD isn’t on iTunes. According to Amazon, it’s out of print. Find it. Buy it. Love it.

Christmas Portrait - The Carpenters. Is there anything better than Karen Carpenter singing “Merry Christmas, Darling”? I submit to you that there is not.

The Christmas Song - Nat “King” Cole. ‘Nuff said.

Let There Be Peace On Earth - U.S. Army Field Band. We have a dear friend who is a featured tenor with the Army Field Band. But even if we didn’t, this CD is beautiful.

I’m also looking forward to plugging “Christmas” into Pandora Radio and finding out what happens!

Did I leave off one of your must-haves?

Sunday Retrospective - November 16, 2008

(This post is part of the Sunday Setlists blog carnival. Check out what other worship leaders are doing around the world…)

After going off-series for the International Day Of Prayer For The Persecuted Church last week, we’re back into the book of Philippians. Jim is doing a great job on it.

Our worship set (links to iTunes):

A Thousand Hallelujahs (Mark Roach) - Mark’s CD “Every Reason Why” has been a big part of my personal worship lately. Good stuff.
Made Me Glad (Miriam Webster) - The lyrics to this are SO strong.
You Have Been So Good (Paul Baloche / Sara Groves) - We plan on bringing this song back to be a big part of our Thanksgiving.
All Praise And Honor (Paul Baloche) - We ended this song with some open-ended worship…I eventually started singing the bridge to “I Will Boast” slowly, and then gradually got up tempo with it, then rocked into the intro for…
I Will Boast (Paul Baloche) - This is SUCH a fun song to do. And a great setting to a scripture that we don’t sing much.
(Hmm. Didn’t mean to go for the Baloche trifecta. These are the songs God led us to…we don’t worry about who wrote ‘em)

It was a very good service. How was yours?

Behold The Awesomeness

My inner geek is breaking into cold sweats of anticipation…

Looks pretty good to me. Obviously the Enterprise, but some nice tweaks. And the new trailer hits this Friday with “Quantum Of Solace”.

Woo hoo!

2008 Election Results By County

Always an interesting map to see after the election…red counties voted Republican, blue voted Democrat (click the map for a closer look):
